Yvonne Chaka Chaka to headline Ghana’s ‘African Legends Night’
Ghanaian show the annual African Legends Night has hosted six editions without a female headlining artist.
That will change at this year's event, which will take place on 24 September at the Banquet Hall, State House, Accra, Ghana. The organisers have announced South African artist Yvonne Chaka Chaka as headliner. She becomes the first female main artist to grace the event’s stage.
In previous editions, the event has welcomed acclaimed African artists as varied as Hugh Masekela, Femi Kuti, Freddy Meiway, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Amakye Dede and others.
Yvonne Chaka Chaka, fondly referred to as the Princess of Africa, will be expected to sing some of her hit songs from years past including such favourites as ‘I am in love with the DJ’, ‘I am Burning Up’, ‘Thank You Mr. DJ’, and ‘Umqombothi’.
In the past, Yvonne Chaka Chaka has worked with Grammy winning artists Angelique Kidjo, Miriam Makeba, Youssou N’Dour, Annie Lennox and Bono, frontman of the rock band U2.
For the African Legends Night, which is supported by Vodafone and presented by Global Media Alliance, Yvonne Chaka Chaka will be sharing the stage with Ghanaian singer Wiyaala, nicknamed Young Lioness of Africa. The younger artist expressed her feelings on social media. “It is an honour to be supporting the Princess of Afropop,” she wrote, adding the hashtag, "Dreams Do Come True".
The event will also feature performances by Akosua Agyapong, Nana Tuffuor, and kpanlogo man Amandzeba Nat Brew.
