Radio Africa and the Radio Television Guinea Archive

Radio Africa was launched and maintained by Graeme Counsel since 1999. The website was initially a radio programme of the same name; it then existed simply to play its collections in the form of playlists. Apart from just playing music, the website has discographies of West African recording labels and album reviews; this featured recordings of African music that were no longer in print.

The website has now expanded to feature rare videos, discographies, music, publications, and external links to other African-based projects. In 2008, 2009 and 2012-2013, Counsel received a major research project award through the British Library's Endangered Archive's Programme to digitise the entire Radio Télévision Guinée (RTG) sound archive in Conakry, Guinea. The archive consists of thousands of audio reels, videos, and 24mm film. 9,410 songs from the years 1960 to 2000 were archived, most of which were recorded between 1967 to 1984 at the height of Guinea's Cultural Revolution.

In 2015, a book, From dust to digital: Ten years of the Endangered Archives Programme was published.
