Klevor Abo

Bio

Dr. Klevor Abo is a music lecturer from Ghana. He is now based in Chicago, U.S. where he is an adjunct Professor of Africana Studies and Social Sciences at City Colleges of Chicago.

Dr. Abo earned earned a BA in Music and English in 1976. He is also am graduate of Linguistics and African Studies at University of Ghana, 1973-76. He trained as a baritone, as a student of Henrietta Carter and lyric operatic soprano, specializing in Africanist Art Songs for voice and piano. Between 1977 and 1980, he worked as a Graduate Research assistant of Professor J. H. Kwabena Nketia's at the university's world famous Institute of African Studies. He pursued his research job prior to Prof. Nketia's retirement. In June 1990, he earned MMus (Ethnomusicology) from Goldsmiths' College, University of London. Shortly afterwards, he served as Paris Correspondant, West Africa magazine. Between February 1991 and May 1994 he was a Lecturer at University of Namibia's department of Music. In 1994, he became head of department of African Music FUBA (Federated Union of African Arts).

From 1995 to 1996, he worked at The Musics of Africa and West African Drumming, FUNDA Institute in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa. (1995-96). He has also taught in the departments of Ethnic Studies and Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University. In August, 2004, he earned a doctoral degree in American Cultures Studies, with a dissertation titled Black Whiteness, White Blackness Aand The Making Of Global African Identities.

From August 2008 to May 2011, he taught at the Africana Studies Program, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois.
