Abantu Band

Bio

Abantu, which means the people, is a Pan Afrikan and Black Conscious Band that set about foregrounding Afrikan discourse in the creative scene. The band brings with it a wide array of creatives that have vast knowledge in the performance scene and Afrikan knowledge aiming at recentering Afrika at the heart of the performance.

Abantu band sets to put on a performance that narrates the history of the Afrikan people and artistic outliers of these communities using mediums of spoken word, live painting and music. From the earliest Sharan rock art (6500 BC) in Niger to Princess Magogo (1900). From ‘the magic of Malombo’ (Lefifi Tladi 2016) to the radical Marachera. From Kush and Nubia to Kemet. From King Khandakhulu to Barwa. The God of Okeke to the spirits of Orishas. The resilient spirit of Fela Kuti to the ever daring person of Lesego Rampolokeng. A Dumile Feni to Bra Long Lebogo. Medu Arts ensemble to Mihloti. We set out to journey the audience through the passage of Afrikan history from pre colonial times to very modern days.

What informs the content of Abantu Band is years of collective experience and love for Afrikan aesthetics.
