Afro-Nyota

Bio

Afro-Nyota is a contemporary African ensemble from Florida State University.

The group draws its repertory from highlife, juju, Taarab, kwela, Afrobeat, Afro-Pop, and soukous, fusing indigenous African instruments with Western orchestra and jazz band instruments. The ensemble uses the word “contemporary” to distinguish, capture, and portray its essence and objectives, which are: to perform popular African music(s) that represent the vastness, complexities, and diversities of day-to-day sonic soundscapes of contemporary African communities; to replicate and provide African communal experiences to ensemble members, participants and audiences.
