The Kim

Born in Gaborone, Botswana; Kim Karabo Makin is a multidisciplinary artist, radio DJ and Master of Fine Art graduate.

Her practice at present compounds aspects of her background in Sculpture (her undergraduate major), along with her experience in Radio — presenting on-air at UCT Radio for over 5 years. In this way, she views her DJ practice as a part of her Artistic practice at large. In 2022, she completed an online radio residency with Ja Ja Ja Nee Nee Nee - an online radio platform dedicated to the arts, based in Amsterdam. With this project, she aimed to use the DJ mix as a method for curating aural archives in contemporary Africa. In so doing, she is heavily inspired by music, in considering music as a marker of time, space, place, a people and/or some aspect of history. In 2022, she started a DJ duo along with friend and colleague Thero Makepe, called Two Seater.

The pair went on to host 'Two Seater Fridays' regularly at Zest, as the restaurant and Gaborone Club's resident DJs. They also assisted monthly with private events and live performances, as a part of the committee for 'The Perfect Noise' open mic sessions. In addition, Two Seater headlined at Naked Soul Picnic hosted by Mpho Sebina, and went on to be featured on Yarona FM's Cool and the Gang, Coolerbox Mix with Mdu The Party. In 2023, The Kim participated in Rackless Kazi at Modzi Arts (Lusaka, Zambia) — a 6-day interactive residency program aimed at young female DJs from Southern Africa, along with DJ mentors Ms Selfie, Milky Way, Lady Light, DJ Tendai and Kampire.
