Esther Niyifasha

Bio

Esther Niyifasha, a talented and passionate traditional artist, has made a significant impact in the world of music with her expertise in playing the inanga, a traditional Rwandan instrument. Born in Rwanda and following in the footsteps of renowned inanga player Sofia Nzayisenga, Esther has quickly gained popularity for her captivating performances and dedication to preserving the country's musical heritage.

At the age of 20, Esther released her first single, 'Urashoboye' (You are Able), on the eve of International Women's Day. The song serves as a tribute to women and girls, emphasizing their strength and abilities to make positive changes in the world. Inspired by the reluctance of women around her to showcase their talents, Esther's song encourages everyone, regardless of gender, to embrace their unique voices and passions.

While recording her debut song presented its challenges, such as finding producers familiar with the inanga and organizing performers for the music video, Esther overcame these obstacles with determination. Her ultimate goal is to produce more music that conveys meaningful messages and promotes Rwanda's beautiful culture, both to the people of Rwanda and to international audiences.

Esther's musical journey began in January of the previous year when she decided to pursue traditional music as a career. Having learned to play various instruments, including the piano and guitar, she found her true calling in mastering the inanga. She recognized the importance of joining Sophie Nzayisenga, the only other female inanga player at the time, in preserving this aspect of Rwandan culture. Esther learned the inanga from her brother, Deo Munyakazi, a seasoned musician, and through dedication and practice, she mastered the instrument in three years.

Throughout her musical journey, Esther has faced challenges and skepticism from peers who discouraged her because of her young age and misconceptions about the inanga's sound. However, with the support of her family and some friends, she persevered and continued to pursue her passion. Her parents and siblings played a vital role in ensuring she had the necessary resources to pursue her musical ambitions, with her brother Albert Niyonsaba even becoming her manager.

Esther not only aims to become a prominent inanga player but also hopes to inspire confidence in women and girls, emphasizing the power of talent and its ability to shape lives. She also envisions using her success to support and uplift underprivileged children who possess talents that can positively impact their lives.

In addition to her mastery of the inanga, Esther remains versatile in playing other instruments, including the guitar and piano, which she showcases in her performances. While she desires to be recognized as a prominent inanga player, she intends to continue exploring her musical talents and engaging with other instruments.

Esther Niyifasha's musical journey serves as a testament to her dedication, resilience, and commitment to preserving Rwanda's cultural heritage through the enchanting sounds of the inanga. Her passion for music and her desire to empower others, especially women and children, make her an influential figure in the Rwandan music scene. As she...
