Kgosi Bathoen Ii (segopotso) Museum
Bio
Located Southern Bostwana, Kanye, Kgosi Bathoen Ii (segopotso) Museum has few collections, most of which are artwork from students in nearby schools and a few music instruments used by the surrounding communities. It houses the history of the Ngwaketse the chief group in Southern District. It also contains artifacts made according to the Setswana culture. It is situated at the Main Mall.
Bathoen II of Bangwaketse is credited for being the first Motswana and leader to come up with the idea of starting a museum in Botswana and there are even claims that he was behind the idea of the National Museum of Botswana in Gaborone. He started the museum in Kanye in the 1960s using the old London Missionary Society building.
The museum ultimately closed when Bathoen became too old to run it on daily basis. In the 1990s, a cultural conservation group led by Abram Kesupile called ‘Kgotletsa’ to revive the chieftaincy helped to establish the Kgosi Bathoen II (Segopotso) Museum in 1998. It is located in the old colonial building near the Kanye mall just behind Choppies stores.
The Bangwaketse have much history which could be collected and conserved, but the museum suffers from a lack of funds.
