Bio
Lenna Bahule (she/her) is a vocalist, composer and art educator from Mozambique. She is known for her vocal range and arrangements, as well as rhythmic sounds that blend indigenous traditional with contemporary sounds from Mozambique, Brazil and other Afro cultures. Her intuitive, transcendental and captivating music style is characterized by the use of organic materials to produce sound, lyrics in different African and imaginary languages, and immersive body-mind-soul experiences. The years spent in Brazil performing with bands, dedicated to vocal music research and exploring innovative ways of using voice and body for artistic expression, made Lenna Bahule the unique musician she is today.
Lenna Bahule has collaborated with musicians around the world, including renowned names like Varijashree Venugopal (India), Mélanie Bourire (La Réunion), Virginia Rodrigues (Brasil), Mû Mbana (Guinea-Bissau), Paulo Flores (Angola), and Stewart Sukuma (Mozambique). She has performed on stages across the globe, such as the Indian Ocean Music Market in La Réunion, SESC theatres in Brasil, Bushfire Festival in Eswatini, Serralves em Festa in Portugal, among others. Her debut album "NÔMADE," focusing on indigenous vocal expressions, earned acclaim as one of the top 100 albums produced in Brazil in 2016. In 2020, she released an album with Mozambican indigenous songs for children and families called “mémorias daqui – cantares e outros sons”. Lenna is also the voice behind the soundtrack (“Eu quero ser”) of the first Mozambican telenovela to be shown at prime time, which was selected as the best song in the category “Female Revelation” of Ngoma in 2024. She was the winner of the 2nd Mozal Arts and Culture Award (PMAC) in the music category in 2019, in 2024 she received the Prince Claus Seed Award.
As an art educator, Lenna Bahule guides and conducts activities and courses related to group singing, body music and repertoire of indigenous popular music from Mozambique.
Lenna Bahule’s latest musical project is “Kumlango”, which means "portal" in Yaawo, a language from the province of Niassa, Mozambique. The album is a sound journey that navigates between the organic and electronic, exploring different sound textures. Lenna Bahule and her band play traditional sounds and sing in different languages from Mozambique and African diasporas, thereby creating an Afro-futuristic soundscape rooted in the past and looking to the future, reminiscent of the cycle of life. The album was released in three parts - “Kwisa” and “Nadawi” in 2024 and "Mate" in 2025. The whole album is now available on all streaming platforms.
