Moretele Park Tribute Concert

Bio

The Tribute To South African Music Heroes Concert is one of Gauteng’s top annual music events and one of the best ways to celebrate the start of spring. It attracts thousands of music fans from across the country and features South African legends and emerging musicians. Held at Moretele Park in Mamelodi, the tribute concert was launched at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto in August 1998.

In 2013, the event celebrated 16 years of existence. More than 60 legendary musicians and music industry luminaries have recieved the coveted Tribute Award since the inception of the annual concert. Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbulu, Abdullah Ibrahim and Jonas Gwangwa were the first six SA music heroes to win the awards. The concert assists in creating work, fighting poverty and building sustainable livelihoods in and around Tshwane. Workshops and skills development for musicians, technicians and other industry practitioners are held throughout the set-up and implementation of the event. Since its inception the concert has worked with the Heritage School of Music, a Pretoria-based music school, and has adopted it as an annual beneficiary of the event. The 2013 edition saw legends like Barney Rachabane, Hugh Masekela, Caiphus Semenya, Stimela share a stage with contemporary stars such as Zahara, Mafikizolo, Malaika, Thandiswa Mazwai, Toya De Lazy and others.
