Quava Vocal Group
Bio
Quava Vocal Group (simply called Quava) is a multi-award winning chamber choir based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Though based in Johannesburg, it consists of singers from across the Gauteng province's major municipalities. The choir sings a varied program that includes traditional and contemporary western choral, jazz and African music.
In July 2018, the group participated in the World Choir Games and was awarded two gold medals in the jazz and mixed chamber choirs categories of the open competition. In June 2019, the group was awarded a Standing Ovation Award after their stellar performance at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda. The Standing Ovation Award recognises excellence in production at the festival. Quava prides itself as a group that presents quality music with a creative angle. In the years to come, the group hopes to share its music with the rest of South Africa and the world. In September 2019 Quava was part of the RMB Starlight Classics featuring the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra conducted by Richard Cock and various artists such as Zahara, Musa Ngqungwana, Siki Jo-Anne, Charl du Plessis and more. In October 2019, we celebrated our 10th anniversary in front of a sold-out audience in a 1000-seater auditorium in Johannesburg. Quava successfully embarked on its first ever international tour in October 2022 to Italy and Spain. In this tour, the choir presented several concerts in Rome and took part in the Sing For Gold World Choral Cup competition and won all the categories in which it participated (adult choirs and jazz categories) and received the best conductor prize.
