Radio Africa and Radio Television Guinea Archive

Launched in 1999, Radio Africa Radio Television Guinea Archives are maintained by Graeme Counsel. The website was initially a radio programme which later included discographies of West African recording labels and album reviews. The reviews featured recordings of African music that were no longer in print.

The website has now expanded to feature rare videos, discographies, music, publications, and external links to other African-based projects.

In the years 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013, Graeme Counsel received a major research project award through the British Library's Endangered Archive's Programme to digitise the entire Radio Télévision Guinée (RTG) sound archive in Conakry, Guinea. The archive consisted of thousands of audio reels, videos, and 24mm film. A total of 9 410 songs from the years 1960 to 2000 were archived. Most of these songs were recorded at the height of Guinea's Cultural Revolution between 1967 and 1984.

In 2015, a book called ‘From dust to digital: Ten years of the Endangered Archives Programme’ was published. The book contains a chapter on the RTG projects called ‘Music for a revolution: The sound archives of Radio Télévision Guinée’. A total of 22 songs from the archive are embedded in a pdf file with the chapter from the book.
