Bio
Papama Mnqandi, known as South Africa's Jazz MC (SA-JAZZ MC), is a pioneering arts innovator and passionate advocate for the Creative Economy. With nearly two decades of experience as the resident MC of the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, Papama has introduced audiences to a plethora of local and international jazz legends, including Grammy Award winner Maria Schneider, Lionel Loueke, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and the late Bra Hugh Masekela and Caiphus Semenya.
Papama's impressive festival credentials include the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Nelson Mandela Bay Music Festival, and his recent appointment as Festival Director of the Umtiza Arts Festival in East London. He has also curated and hosted various concerts, including the Wits School of Arts Jazz Cosmopolitanism Concert and an International Jazz Day Concert in East London.
As a jazz scholar, Papama is deeply invested in the transformative power of public culture, performing arts, and live music. He is committed to developing a local venue circuit in East London, partnering with restaurants, hotels, and malls to promote the city's creative wealth and the impact of music.
Papama's training includes the Music in Africa Foundation's instrument building program (2017) and the Atelje for Young Festival Managers Johannesburg (2017). He is a versatile MC and orator, comfortable hosting events ranging from corporate functions to informal street performances. As South Africa's trusted Jazz MC, Papama continues to champion the country's vibrant jazz scene.
