Traditional Music Archive (TRAMA) (University of Khartoum)
Bio
The Traditional Music Archive (TRAMA) was established at the University of Khartoum in January 1994 as a result of funding from the Ford Foundation. It operates within the Institute of African and Asian Studies (IAAS). The IAAS is divided into three departments namely languages, African and Asian studies and folklore. TRAMA is hosted within the Folklore Department.
The archive consists of audio and video collections of about 4000 recorded hours collected through fieldwork and have since produced five audiocassettes representing five genres of Sudanese traditional music.
TRAMA continues to organize seminars and workshops in the fields of traditional music and folklore collection, documentation and research. It carries out many fieldwork trips to various parts of Sudan to collect traditional music and folklore data for its archive.
TRAMA’s audiovisual library and academic lecture and seminar program works constantly to provide graduate and undergraduate students, researchers and interested people with invaluable data about traditional music and folklore of Sudan.
