Western Kgalagadi Cultural Association (WKCA) Festival

The Western Kgalagadi Cultural Festival is a cultural tourism product held in Kang, Botswana. It was spear-headed by the Western Kgalagadi Cultural Association and was designed to increase tourist flows to the Western Kgalagadi Conservation Corridor; to share and promote primarily San culture and cultures of the other ethnic groups in the project area; and to generate income for residents of the WKCC in general, as well as the membership of the Western Kgalagadi Cultural Association.

The Festival provides a platform to allow an interface for cultural exchange, facilitate the interaction between communities and visitors (domestic and international) as well as to help promote cultural identity and help preserve local traditions.
Groups representing the settlements of Khawa, Kokotsha, Phuduhudu, Zutshwa, Inalegolo, Maake, Monong, Ukhwi, Bere, New Xade, West Hanahai, Kacgae and New Xanagas comprising traditional instrumentalists and contemporary traditional dance bands usually form of the performance roster during the two-day festival.

The WCKA festival was first established in 2010 with the objective of supporting Botswana’s tourism strategy, to diversify both the tourism products and destinations across Botswana. The WKCA festival is similar to the Kuru Cultural dance festival, but is primarily designed as a commercial tourism product, aimed at increasing the number of tourists to the Kgalagadi region.
