Afro-Latin Tamasha
Nairobi, KenyaKenya's Afro-Latin dance scene is rapidly growing, showcasing a wealth of talented instructors, dancers and choreographers. Building on this momentum, the inaugural Afro-Latin Tamasha music and dance event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 2nd November 2024 at Alliance Française in Nairobi.
The Afro-Latin Tamasha event will showcase a diverse range of individual or couple dance performances from Kenyan and international artists. The performers include Jos Lyon & Kerrtu (Bachata) from Estonia, Tanzania’s Michu & Dominika (Urban Kiz) and Diddy and the Stars (Afrobeat/Afro-Latin fusion) and from Kenya: Esther Reggaeton, Sanchez Salvador & Luycer (Cuban Son), The Gentlemen (Afrobeat/Gengetone fusion), Anno’s One Fine Day Art Centre (Ballet), Maestros Casineros (Rueda de Casino), JP (Shega/Reggaeton fusion), Dance With Me Malindi (Afrobeat/Bongo/Amapiano fusion) and Passion en Fuego Dance Studio (Afro-Latin fusion).
Robert Munene, the Executive Producer and Team Lead of the festival, is also a passionate dancer and enthusiast of Afro-Latin dance. He shares, “Afro Latin Tamasha will be a vibrant celebration of Afro-Latin culture, with electrifying live bands and DJs at its heart. This event promises to be a hub of joy and cultural connection through music and dance, offering dazzling performances from our dynamic dance community. The event will kick off with DJs delivering an exhilarating blend of diverse genres from Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba, Semba and Kompa to Afrobeats; paving the way for an evening of diverse festivities and genres. Dance troupes and duo performances will display the sophistication of Afro-Latin dance as live band performances of Afro Latin music will compel the audience to sway, dance and mingle.
Afro-Latin Tamasha extravaganza is expected to bring together Afro-Latin Kenyan musicians, dancers, choreographers, dance enthusiasts, revellers and DJs. This event goes beyond just celebrating Afro-Latin culture; it will be a celebration of diversity, creativity and community. Afro-Latin dance comprises various ballroom and folk styles from Latin America, including Salsa, Kizomba, Bachata, Semba, Cha-cha-cha, and Merengue. Afro-Latin Tamasha will seamlessly blend the vibrant Salsa and Bachata rhythms with the captivating Kizomba and Semba moves from Angola, alongside the unique Sega/Shega beats from the Indian Ocean. Afro-Latin dance in Kenya has seen remarkable growth over the past decade, currently having over 7,000 enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds, including professional dancers, university students, and members of networks like Alliance Française and YMCA. Nairobi has emerged as the East African capital of Latin dance, exerting significant influence across the region, with its trained salsa instructors spreading their expertise to cities such as Kampala, Addis Ababa, Lusaka, Kigali, Dar-es-Salaam, Bujumbura, Goma, and Bukavu.
