AFRIMAs announce programme for 8th edition

The International Committee of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMAs), in conjunction with the African Union Commission and the government of Senegal, has unveiled a programme of events for the eighth edition of the event which will be held in Dakar on 12-15 January 2023.

The eighth AFRIMAs will be held in Dakar from 12 to 15 January 2023.

Tagged the ‘Teranga Edition’, the upcoming edition of the awards will recognise and celebrate African music globally and will be broadcast in over 84 countries.

The AFRIMAs are scheduled to officially start on 12 January with activities including a tour of the host country and a welcome soirée. It will be followed by the Africa Music Business Summit (AMBS) at the Grand Theatre in Dakar on 13 January, featuring workshops and panel discussions on issues and opportunities within the African music industry.

Next up will be the AFRIMAs Music Village, a free-to-enter concert featuring live performances from the biggest music stars across the continent.

The eve of the awards ceremony will witness activities like media engagements and a courtesy visit to the president of Senegal, as well as a live recording session at the venue for musicians across all five regions of the continent and in the diaspora to explore collaborative projects. The day’s activities will end with a nominees' party.

The eighth AFRIMAs will climax on 15 January with the main awards ceremony.

Senegal’s tourism minister Alioune Sarr has reiterated his country’s commitment to achieving the joint objectives of the AU and AFRIMAs by utilising music as a tool to develop Africa’s creative economy.

“We are happy to host the rest of the world, and showcase the beauty of our Senegalese culture and scenery,” Sarr said. “This will sharpen our global image, as a prime destination for tourism and a culturally-rich community.

“AFRIMAs is bringing all these stars together to share not just their art, but their cultures as well,” the scheme’s country director for Senegal Makhtar Diop, adding that the Teranga edition is for everyone, and not just Senegal.”

AFRIMAs president and executive producer Mike Dada said this is not just another music festival. “We are an institution committed to promoting African music across the continent and in the world. The Teranga edition is here and it is something we are all proud of.”

Voting is still ongoing here before it closes on 11 January.

AFRIMAs 2022
