Afrobeats stars nominated for BRIT Awards 2023
Nigerian Afrobeats stars Burna Boy and Fireboy DML have secured nominations at the 2023 BRIT Awards (BRITs) in the UK ahead of the awards show at the O2 Arena in London on 11 February.
The BRITs were first presented in 1977 and are regarded as the biggest night in British music. This is the third time Burna Boy has been nominated at the British Phonographic Industry’s annual music celebration. He is up for the International Artist of the Year Award alongside Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Lizzo and Taylor Swift.
Fellow Nigerian artist Fireboy DML scored a nomination in the International Song of the Year category for his song ‘Peru’ featuring Ed Sheeran.
Meanwhile, British-Ghanaian rapper Stormzy secured nods for Album of the Year, British Artist of the Year and Best Hip-Hop/Grime/Rap.
This year’s most nominated artists include Harry Styles and indie rock band Wet Leg, who scored four nods each.
Comedian Mo Gilligan will make his return as host for the second year running.
“Hosting the BRITs last year was one of the most phenomenal nights of my life,” Gilligan said. “I’ve been so honoured to get to know the incredible team behind the biggest night in music and so proud to bring our amazing audiences even closer to their new artists. I promise you, we’re going to go bigger than ever this year.”
