Banky W and Iyanya to release joint album
Much of the most talked about collaborations in the Nigerian music industry this year have been with local artists and foreign ones. That may soon change. The Davido and US rapper Meek Mill song ‘Fans Mi’ is perhaps the most popular of such local-foreign collaborations in 2015. There was also the remix to the Wizkid hit Ojuelegba, which featured Drake, another rapper from the US.
A different type of geographical partnership played out earlier this year when Phyno, who is from Nigeria’s eastern region, and Olamide, who is from the west, released 2 Kings. The album’s success without a video has made the industry look again.
If a recent declaration by pop star Iyanya is to be believed, audiences will be happy to learn that a collaborative album between Iyanya himself and Banky W, two of the country’s biggest R&B stars, will be out next year.
‘Watch out for me and Banky,’ Iyanya said, speaking to Hip TV recently. ‘We are dropping an R&B album. Just stay around.’ No further information was offered by the ‘Kukere’ singer who is embarking on a tour of Nigerian universities. For his part, Banky W is expected to release an album following release of the single ‘High Notes’ in mid-2015.
It is perhaps the next step for both Iyanya and Banky W after the duo exchanged verses on ‘Baby Daddy,’ a song off Iyanya’s recently released third album Applaudise.
