BET Hip Hop Awards 2023: All the winners
The winners of the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards, which were recorded at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on 3 October, were unveiled when the ceremony officially aired on 10 October.
The awards celebrated 50 years of hip hop, honouring top talents in the genre, including performers, producers and music video directors.
Ghanaian musician Black Sherif, whose victory in the Best International Flow category emerged in an apparently leaked video from the recording last week, was Africa’s sole winner. He edged Zambia’s Sampa the Great, the late South African rapper AKA and South African hip hop artist K.O to take home the award. The other nominees in the category were J Hus (UK), Central Cee (UK), Gazo (France), Major RD (Brazil), Ninho (France) and Tasha & Tracie (Brazil).
In his acceptance speech, Black Sherif, who is behind the chart-topping debut album The VIllain I Never Was (2022), reflected on his rapid rise to international fame in just four years, expressing gratitude to all those who played a part in his success. He also extended an invitation to the diaspora to visit Africa. “Remember you are kings and queens back home,” he said. “Welcome back home”
Despite heading into the awards as Africa’s leading nominee and the third-most nominated act with seven nods, Nigeria’s Burna Boy was unable to secure a trophy.
Meanwhile, rapper Kendrick Lamar emerged as the night’s biggest winner with four awards.
