Boomplay partners with MTN Nigeria on ‘affordable bundles’
Africa-facing music streaming service Boomplay this week partnered with telecoms giant MTN Nigeria to launch the Boomplay x MTN data bundle, which offers MTN subscribers tailored data to stream unlimited music and access premium content on Boomplay.
The move forms part of efforts by both companies to continue making music easily available to subscribers. In previous years, MTN Nigeria struck similar deals with Tidal and Audiomack. In 2021, Boomplay announced a strategic partnership with Airtel Nigeria to offer subscribers access to more affordable streaming.
The new bundle offers MTN users daily, weekly and monthly subscription packages to gain access to Boomplay’s catalogue of more than 70 million songs.
“Boomplay continues to drive the growth and advancement of music streaming across Africa and this partnership will further propel Boomplay’s vision and expectations,” a statement reads. “The introduction of affordable bundles will spur the next wave of music streaming growth across the continent.”
The available Boomplay music plans include one-day access with 250MB data at ₦99 ($0.24), weekly access with 1.2GB data at ₦449 and monthly access with 2.5GB data at ₦999. MTN users will be able to purchase any of the bundles by texting specific codes to 8012 or subscribing with the Boomplay app’s airtime payment feature.
“Music is an integral part of youth entertainment and we are glad to partner with Boomplay to bring accessible and affordable music entertainment to Nigerian youth,” MTN Nigeria acting chief digital officer A’isha Umar Mumuni said. “In our pursuit to deliver superior value to our subscribers, we continue to collaborate with a mix of digital content partners and bundle services with data access, so nothing can come between our customers and the content they love. The platform allows users to create playlists, watch/download music videos, and interact with other music lovers by following their profiles. We hope this brings value to our audiences.”
Boomplay Nigeria general manager Dele Kadiri said: “This partnership is an attestation of our commitment to making music streaming as affordable as possible. High data costs are one of the barriers to the growth of music streaming and we are glad to be partnering with MTN to provide this special data bundle.”
Boomplay boasts more than 65 million monthly active users and has been downloaded more than 100 million times on Google Play. Earlier this year, the company signed a reciprocal partnership with Triller to promote the two companies’ African music playlists. The digital service provider’s streaming data is now also included in a number of Billboard charts.
