Nigeria’s Burna Boy has been nominated in the International Male Solo Artist category ahead of the 2020 Brit Awards at the O2 Arena in London on 18 February.
The Afro-fusion superstar is nominated alongside veteran American icon Bruce Springsteen, Irish singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy, American singer, rapper Post Malone, and American rapper Tyler, the Creator.
In addition, ‘Location’, a song that British-Nigerian rapper Dave featured Burna Boy on, is in contention for the Song of the Year award. Dave’s debut album Psychodrama topped the UK Albums Chart last year and went on to win the 2019 Mercury Prize.
Burna Boy, who is nominated for a Grammy Award, is basking in the glory of the success of his 2019 release African Giant. The album has received countless awards, most recently three accolades at last Saturday’s Soundcity MVP Awards.
Meanwhile, Michael Kiwanuka, whose parents fled Idi Amin’s regime in Uganda in the 1970s, received two Brit Award nominations in the British Male Solo Artist and British Album of the Year categories. The latter of the nominations is for his third studio album Kiwanuka released late last year.
Another musical artist with African roots, British-Ghanaian rapper Stormzy, was nominated in the Song of the Year category for his hit ‘Vossi Bop’ as well as for British Album of the Year for Heavy Is the Head. His third nomination is for British Male Solo Artist.
Last year, the Brit Awards saw Pink honoured for her outstanding contribution to music, while Drake won the International Male Solo Artist award.
Comedian Jack Whitehall will host the 2020 awards ceremony for a third year running.
