Burna Boy to perform at 2024 Grammy Awards
Afrobeats star Burna Boy has been confirmed as one of the performers at the 66th Grammy Awards scheduled for Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, US, on 5 February.
The sole African artist featured in this year’s line-up, Burna Boy joins previously announced performers, including Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and Olivia Rodrigo.
Burna Boy’s appearance marks his return to the premiere ceremony having performed at the 63rd edition in 2021 where he delivered a medley of his hits ‘Level Up’, Onyeka’ and ‘Ye.’ That year, he also clinched the trophy for Best Global Music Album.
Burna Boy scored four nods for the upcoming awards – Best Melodic Rap Performance, Best Global Music Album, Best Global Music Performance and Best African Music Performance. Burna Boy’s fellow Nigerian singer Davido secured three nods, while counterparts Asake, Olamide, Ayra Starr scored their first nominations in the newly introduced Best African Performance category. South Africa’s Tyla was also nominated in the latter category.
Two other new categories will debut at next month’s awards, namely Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.
According to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr, the additions reflect the scheme’s “commitment to actively listen and respond to the feedback from our music community, accurately represent a diverse range of relevant musical genres, and stay aligned with the ever-evolving musical landscape.”
South African Comedian and former The Daily Show host Trevor Noah returns as host of the 2024 Grammys for the fourth consecutive year. The ceremony will be aired live on CBS and Paramount+.
