Call for applications: Music course in Malawi
Music Crossroads Malawi is calling on young aspiring musicians to apply for the 2018 intake to study for a certificate in professional music. The one-year course is designed to give artists an opportunity to equip themselves with knowledge on how to become professional musicians and how to take part in the competitive music industry.
Closing date for applications is 12 January 2018 and classes will begin on 15 January.
The course also provides a solid training on practical and theoretical dimensions of music education.
Situated in Lilongwe, Music Crossroads Malawi is made up of accomplished faculty members with a wide range of specialisations and visiting musicians, guest teachers and educators.
“An emphasis is put on relevant contemporary styles of music, thus African and African-descendant styles of music form the core of the curriculum,” Music Crossroads Malawi project manager Vincent Maluwa said.
“In our one-year programme, students have the opportunity to learn bass guitar, drums, lead guitar, vocals, keyboard, rhythm and body percussion, as well as choir and traditional dance ensemble with our experienced teachers.
“All of these courses are carried out at our academy, which is equipped with musical instruments and state-of-the-art sound labs, using top-class MIDI keyboards and software like Ableton and Reason to allow our students to become real professionals.”
Maluwa said the course covered a wide range of topics. “We provide a background to our practical music classes with modules like music theory, rhythmic reading and writing, harmony, keyboard harmony and music styles of Africa.
"To give solid training in music production we are also offering workshops and seminars in sound engineering, music management, stage performance, band management, music business and management, and ensemble performances.”
Maluwa encouraged students to challenge themselves and to discover their own distinctive, musical voice.
"At the end of the one-year certificate course, Music Crossroads Academy trainees will have acquired the theoretical and practical knowledge sufficient to be able to continue their studies at a higher level, to pursue a solid and lasting musical career or even become music teachers.
“Our students actively engage with the course material, and through a blend of monitored practice, theoretical study, live concerts and master classes, we provide them with all of the tools necessary to become a true professional.”
