Call for participation: Free jazz workshop in South Africa
The Cape Town Music Academy (CTMA) and Toyota US Woordfees are calling on musicians to attend a free jazz workshop at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, South Africa, from 6 to 8 March.
The event, which forms part of the Youth in Music Excellence (YME) initiative, seeks to develop, shape and elevate young musician’s skills and pursuits. The workshop will consist of a series of educational and performance workshops including group lectures, ensemble and individual work.
YME says it has taken a holistic approach, which, apart from music lessons, also includes sessions in psychology, marketing, music business and etiquette. This speaks to the conduct of the musician as an individual and a business, it said.
The initiative is curated by the director of Real Wired Music, Gavin Minter, CTMA music director Schalk Joubert and the University of Cape Town's department of music deputy head, Dr Andrew Lilley.
International lecturers will include some of Sweden’s top jazz professionals, including lead trumpeter and musical director of the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra Fredrik Norén, award-winning alto saxophone player Fredrik Kronkvist and drummer Adam Ross.
German bass player and Munich University lecturer Martin Zenker will also teach at the workshop.
Two categories are available for participants:
- Senior course – 6 to 8 March, open to students 14 to 22 years.
- Junior course – 7 March, open to primary school students.
Participants will be rewarded with a certificate of attendance.
