Call for proposals: Goethe-Institut Project Space grant
The Goethe-Institut in South Africa is calling on artists to submit proposals for the Goethe-Institut Project Space (GPS) fund. The programme will support work realised all over South Africa ranging from workshops to exhibitions, events and performances – including music, dance, visual art, literature, film and theatre projects.
Founded last year, GPS is a multidisciplinary roving project space that follows on GoetheOnMain, which was based at Arts On Main in Johannesburg from May 2009 to November 2016.
Artists have until 5 September to submit their proposals. Applicants need to download an application form, which is available here.
GPS is envisioned as a free non-commercial, artist-centred platform designed to support not only the artists and their projects but also the many structures, spaces and festivals that currently exist and need partnerships of this nature to continue their work.
How does GPS work?
GPS enables musicians, composers, dancers, writers, actors, artists, performers, curators, choreographers and directors to select the space and infrastructure they wish to work with. If awarded, a GPS grant would support both the hosting space and the project itself.
The initiative expands the institute’s support to smaller spaces situated outside the main metropolitan centres. Grant recipients will also be able to produce their work locally with a partner of their choice.
Similarly to the GoetheOnMain project that preceded it, a public call for proposals is presided over by an independent jury of arts professionals, who make the project selection.
Goethe-Institut looks forward to seeing installations, workshops, events and performances – including music, visual art, literature, film, public art, dance and theatre work – realised throughout South Africa through GPS grants.
GPS forms part of the Goethe-Institut’s programme that promotes intercultural engagement through fostering dialogue and exchange in the arts.
The realisation period is from January to December 2018.
Send all material to Goethe-Institut, 119 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, 2193. Applicants may send electronic proposals to Masechaba.Moloi@johannesburg.goethe.org. Note that no part of the proposals will be returned, unless specifically requested before the submission deadline in writing and sent with a self-addressed envelope including a sufficient number of postage stamps.
