Call for submissions: Afropunk Battle of the Bands in SA
Afropunk Festival is calling on unsigned local bands or acts to submit music for the Battle of the Bands competition that will see the winner earn a spot to perform on Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 30 and 31 December.
The winner will share the stage with such artists as Solange Knowles (US), Miguel (US) and NAO (UK). Other artists include Nigerian singer Burna Boy and southern African acts Sjava, Urban Village, Busiswa, Distruction Boyz, Sho Madjozi, Zoë Modiga, Morena Leraba, Darkie Fiction, TCIYF, Umlilo, DBN Gogo, Gina Jeanz, Lelowhatsgood and Fif_Laaa.
Afropunk will also award the winner with a distribution deal with Africori. Afropunk and Africori will also host a two-day seminar for the Battle of the Bands finalists prior to their shows, to furnish all the finalists with the tools they need to take their careers to the next level.
The competition opens on 30 September and interested acts can submit their music here. The submission deadline is 11 October.
“The Battle of the Bands competition has launched various careers across the world, with acts using the platform as a stepping stone to realising their dreams of becoming world-class performing artists,” Afropunk said. “We are happy to announce that BOS Ice Tea will support the 2019 Battle of the Bands competition as brand partners.”
The competition is a challenge for unsigned acts to showcase their musical skills for a chance to perform at the event. The competition, now in its third edition, has awarded such musicians as 2018 winners Red Robyn and Ikati Esengxoweni along with Automatic Live and Stiff Pap who won the competition in 2017.
