Call for submissions: The Music Imbizo 2020 in SA
The Music Imbizo is calling on musicians, curators, speakers and filmmakers to submit applications to participate at its event at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, South Africa, from 26 to 29 August.
The event, which will run under the theme African Unity, the Real Currency, will feature performing artists, speakers, panellists and curators. Interested applicants are invited to submit music, topics, discussion ideas, speaker profiles and films.
Application process
Musicians/bands
The Music Imbizo intends to host a series of showcases across genres at a number of venues around Durban. The selected musicians will share the stage with prominent African artists in front of festival curators, booking agents and promoters.
Interested artists should apply here. The application deadline is 1 March.
Requirements
- Selected artists should be available at The Music Imbizo from 26 to 29 August.
- Selected showcasing artists will receive a modest honorarium towards performance fees (excluding day showcasing artists).
- Selected showcasing artists from outside Durban will receive accommodation. Due to budget constraints, not all selected showcasing artists will be provided transport.
- South African visa costs (where applicable)will be reimbursed against receipts.
- Full access passes to The Music Imbizo 2020 – includes access to all shows and activities for the duration of the conference.
- Artist’s profile in festival and conference programmes, press releases, website and social media. The artists are to provide their own images, once selected.

Amapiano versus gqom/hip hop battles
This is a call intended for all beatmakers interested in participating in the amapiano versus gqom/hip hop battle. The call is only open to delegates of The Music Imbizo 2020. Participants must be in possession of a delegate ticket to take part and they need to send two original beats/instrumentals not longer than two minutes. They must not have any lyrics on them.
Interested participants should apply here. The submission deadline 1 March.
Requirements
- Participants must be available at The Music Imbizo from 28 to 29 August.
- Participants must be in position of a delegate pass (only delegates can battle).
- Profile in conference programmes, press releases, website and social media.
- To battle, you will be notified and must be able to be in Durban during the dates.
- Only the selected will battle, and if by any chance or mistake you battle without meeting the above requirements you will forfeit your winnings and be disqualified.

Curator/event promoter
The call is intended for all festival and event curators, booking agents and promoters as well as individuals that are involved in organising music events. The Music Imbizo 2020 intends to introduce carefully curated showcases that will combine both seasoned, well known musicians with some of the most promising talent Africa has to offer.
Interested individuals should apply here. The application deadline is 1 March.

The Music Imbizo is looking for speakers, researchers and industry players who are willing to contribute to the panel discussions, roundtables and presentations around the theme.
