Davido signs deal with Sony Music’s RCA Records
In January, Davido made headlines when he announced on social media that he had inked a deal with the global corporation Sony Music Entertainment.
The popstar has now received a further endorsement from the global player. This time, Sony Music’s RCA Records, home to the pop act Taylor Swift, has signed a deal with the ‘Aiye’ singer.
This news was made on social media by Efe Ogbeni, an A&R man working with such artists as Quincy Jones and Enrique Iglesias. Ogbeni is also expected to executively produce Davido’s forthcoming album for Sony, as announced by Adam Granite, President of a division of Sony Music back in January: “We are thrilled to welcome Davido into the Sony Music family.
"We are very much looking forward to bringing one of Africa biggest stars to the world. We are also excited to partner with Kamal Ajiboye, Davido’s manager as well as Efe Ogbeni, who will be executive producing the album on our behalf.”
Ogbeni wrote on his Instagram page: “Welcome to #RCA @rcarecords @davidoofficial‘ chairman #peteredge we start the GRIND #afrofusion is here”. He also posted photos of Davido, including one having the singer and the CEO of RCA Records, Peter Edge, smiling.
The announcement is perhaps the first hint of the nature of the relationship between the Nigeria-based singer and the worldwide Sony Music establishment. Previously thought to be solely a distribution deal, the RCA signing indicates a broader working relationship.
The RCA deal follows a series of events that have seen Davido enlarge his reach on the global stage. In recent times, news of his collaboration with R&B singer Tinashe reached the internet. A video is expected to accompany the song.
Also, this past weekend, Davido and a number of other African artists performed at the One Africa Music Festival which was held in New York. Featuring a large number of African artists, the festival was perhaps the most visible that African artists, as a group, have been in many years.
