GEE releases ‘Straight Outta Gambia’
Gambian star GEE, who in the past year spoke about quitting music, has released a new mixtape titled ‘Straight Outta Gambia’. Comprised of about a dozen tracks, SOG features production from a number of producers and contributions from several artists as well.
Some of these producers include Davies Dougie, ShyBoyEnt, Hak Samadhi and No-Face Undacova. ST, Say’hu, Vypa, Bizzle and No-face are artists featured on the album. All tracks were all recorded and mixed at Black Lynx Studio. Straight Outta Gambia, which derives its title from the US film and album Straight Outta Compton, is a free mixtape online and can be downloaded from the datpiff website.
Already the song ‘Targeh Ma’ has become much talked about on social media.
“This mixtape isn’t like any other project I’ve done,” Gee told Voice Vibes. “I’ve fused Mbalax elements on to hardcore, trap, r&b and rap beats. Usually when Rap Mbalax is mentioned, people are expecting to hear that marimba sound throughout the song. Other instruments can give the same vibe depending on the arrangement of your music.”
Several songs on the mixtape show the controversial side of the artist. Songs like the aforementioned ‘Targeh Ma’ discuss his retirement while ‘Rapper Yee’ is dedicated to Gambian rappers.
“Above all,” he said. “I promised my fans in the diaspora a free online mixtape and here it is Straight Outta Gambia, everything on it is Gambian and [is an example] of how rap/hip hop music from The Gambia is expected to sound like.”
