Ghana’s Awurama Badu to be interred February
Ghanaian highlife artist Awurama Badu, who died on 26 October, will be interred on 17 February next year.
Ghana’s Centre for National Culture in Kumasi will host the funeral activities, as was announced at a one-week celebration of the late artist. At the occasion, the deceased family requested for a state burial from the government given Awurama Badu’s contribution to her country’s music scene.
Badu died after an illness that saw her receiving attention at the Effiduase Government Hospital. The cause of death is unclear.
Her death at 72 was confirmed by the Musicians Union of Ghana. The body’s president, Bice Osei Kuffour, issued a statement, saying, “The Musicians Union of Ghana announces with heavy heart the demise of ace highlife musician Awurama Badu.”
Some of her hit songs include ‘Komkom’, ‘Medofo adaada me’ and ‘Obaatan Refre Ne Mma’.
In 2016, an organisation honoured her contribution to music in Ghana at the A Night With Female Legends event. One of her last appearances was at the Music of Ghana Origin concert in 2013.
