Ghana: Female artists sing Ebony tribute
A group of female musicians have released a tribute to their compatriot and late colleague and Ebony.
Titled ‘Nana Hemaa' (Tribute to Ebony), the song is an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO).
The song was performed by prominent Ghanaian female artists including Adina, MzVee, Efya, Freda Rhymz, eShun, Feli Nuna and Adomaa. The accompanying video was posted on Ebony’s YouTube account yesterday.
Since her death on 8 February, various figures in Ghana have paid tribute to the late artist. A memorial organised a week after her death saw rapper Sarkodie deliver a sober tribute while reggae-dancehall artist Shatta Wale wept and attacked members of the media in attendance.
“Somebody daughter if she dress,” he said, “you say e no get respect, but today you people dey here.”
Before her death, Ebony had been touted as a contender for the coveted Artist of the Year Award at the forthcoming Vodafone Ghana Awards. Her death has sparked discussions about a possible posthumous win for her work in 2017, with the event’s organiser, Charterhouse Productions, having to release a statement.
“We all know she has worked very hard the whole of last year and this is a very bad news to hit the industry,” Charterhouse Productions CEO Theresa Ayoade said.
“Her work in the year is in contention and her team has submitted everything in that regard. Therefore, the public can vote for her when nominations are opened.”
