The evening promises a fusion of jazz, improvised music, and contemporary sounds, as Philipp collaborates with local Namibian talents, The Yesterdaye and vocalist Angelina Akawa, known as ZingerWingz.
Philipp, a prominent figure in the European jazz scene, has spent years moving seamlessly between jazz, contemporary, and improvised music. Reflecting on her journey, she shared how her musical career began in her hometown in Germany, where she played in a marching band before attending a music boarding school. Now working as a freelance musician, she performs with her own band and composes for various ensembles and orchestras.
“Together, we bring diverse musical backgrounds to the stage. It’s about listening, respecting each other’s styles, and creating an environment where everyone has the space to contribute,” Philipp said.
With a deep passion for cultural exchange, Philipp emphasised the role of music as a universal language that bridges cultures.
“For me, the most important aspect of travelling and being in the world is connecting with people and cultures. Music is my way of building bridges, and I’m incredibly inspired by the diversity of Namibian cultures,” she said.
The performance marks the culmination of Philipp’s ongoing connection with Namibia’s music scene, which began over two years ago during her first visit. She recalled how the country’s creative environment had a liberating effect on her approach to music.
“I noticed that the way of working here is a bit different, there’s a remarkable sense of ease. I’ve rarely made music as freely and without fear as I did during my time in Namibia.”
Audiences can expect an eclectic mix of jazz, pop, soul, experimental sounds, and powerful vocal performances. Philipp promised a performance full of energy and emotion, saying, “ee’ll celebrate life with intensity and feeling. There will be moments of improvisation, and who knows, something completely unexpected might happen.”
With its blend of German and Namibian influences, Sax in the City is set to be a memorable evening of cultural exchange and musical innovation at the Goethe-Institut Namibia.
