Hugh Masekela to get posthumous award

South African jazz icon Hugh Masekela will be posthumously honoured at the South African leg of the Zimbabwe Achievers Awards in Johannesburg next month.

Hugh Masekela will be awarded posthumously in Johannesburg on 7 April.

Masekela will be given the Friend of Zimbabwe Award for his contribution to music and the arts as well as for philanthropic work on the continent.

The musician and activist died after losing his battle with prostate cancer in January.

"Hugh Masekela was a true friend of Zimbabwe and played a huge role in a number of local musicians' lives and musical journeys," the awards' chairperson, Conrad Mwanza, said. "His philanthropic work was also instrumental in shaping the minds and hearts of young African children who wanted to pursue music."

In addition to the award, Mwanza hinted at the possibility of a musical tribute by musicians who are yet to be confirmed. The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town recently honoured Maskela by naming the second floor of the museum after the musician.

“His unmatched musicality and charm on stage were incredible. He was a teacher and those who had the pleasure of working with him learned a lot," Mwanza said

The award will be presented by legendary Zimbabwean musician Oliver 'Tuku' Mtukudzi who will also receive honorary patronage.

“We are proud to honour Tuku for his outstanding contribution to the music and entertainment industry,” Mwanza said. "His worldwide involvement with UNICEF as a goodwill ambassador for the southern African region has been both influential and inspirational in shaping our continent.”

The Zimbabwe Achievers Awards were established to honour Zimbabweans from various disciplines who contribute to Africa and the diaspora. The event takes place in the US, UK, South Africa and Australia. Preparations for the UK event are already under way.

“Now, more than ever, is a time for us to unite and bring to light what Zimbabweans are doing. It’s time to tell our story because we do have a story to tell, and have so much more to achieve for the betterment of our community here in the diaspora and for our nation, Zimbabwe,” Mwanza said.

The Zimbabwe Achievers Awards takes place at Hilton Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg, on 7 April.
