Mdundo clocks up 10 million users
East Africa’s fastest growing music platform Mdundo has placed its progressive user growth in the region at 10 million after registering an accelerated growth of 8 million users in the past 12 months, with gospel and hip hop as its most popular genres.
“Hip hop and gospel remain to be the most popular over the past few years, which explains our consumers’ consumption behaviour,” Mdundo head of music and operations Wanjiku Koinange said.
"Artists such as Khaligraph Jones, King Kaka, The Kansoul and Darassa continue to top the hip hop charts. Gospel artists have also not been left behind and currently the top Mdundo gospel musicians include Willy Paul, Mercy Masika, Collo and the duo Kilo & Stigah.”
Since its launch in 2013, the music platform has seen tremendous growth in the consumption of music based on the service’s music catalogue and ability to convert music piracy to legal consumption
The music service provider, which has offices across East Africa, has for the past three years grown to include music from 40 000 African artists.
“A big chuck of our growth in the past six months can be accredited to our new consumers in Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, Cameroon and Congo,” Mdundo CEO Martin Nielsen said. “We experience the need for our services in most African markets; people want to access music easily, especially local tunes.”
Mdundo is seeing more than 30 million streams a month thanks to the streaming feature, which was introduced earlier this year on its site and Android app. Additionally, Mdundo hosts 1.5 million listeners every month.
