Music and photography meet in Lagos
On Friday 2 February, Alliance Française Lagos will host an exhibition featuring images of mostly musicians from the continent taken by Selorm Jay.
The exhibition is the first project from the culture centre in 2018, and follows from its decision to focus on photography. Throughout the year, says a statement from the organisation, upcoming photographers will be invited to exhibit work at the Alliance Française premises.
The forthcoming exhibition, adds the statement, “captures the unexpected moments artists share on stage. Some of such moments could be what seems like a trance, as if the artists are getting into a different energy zone, a moment of blissful happiness, pain and passion.”
Capturing the theme of his work to be exhibited, the artist, Jay has named the body of work to be shown Stages/Scènes. “I was naturally drawn to photography and fuelled to create photos and films based on what comes to me,” he said. “I try to always make the most of my environment and find the beauty in it.”
Over the years, the photographer has built a relationship with Accra-based artists working in the urban scene. A self-taught photographer and filmmaker, Jay is also a producer and is currently based in Accra, where he is the creative director of the team documenting, promoting and archiving Ghanaian hip-hop at the website yoyo tinz.
