Open call: Non-executive directors for Joburg Ballet NPC
Joburg Ballet NPC is inviting applications and nominations for the appointment of at least three additional non-executive directors to join its Board. The organisation is seeking to strengthen its leadership capacity and broaden its expertise as it continues to build on its national and international reputation.

Joburg Ballet is one of South Africa’s leading performing arts institutions and operates as a registered non-profit company (Registration number: 2001/016254/08 | NPO: 016-403). Based at the Joburg Theatre Complex, the company is known for staging classical and contemporary ballet productions, commissioning new works, and leading community engagement, training, and transformation initiatives across South Africa.
As the company positions itself for its next phase of growth, it aims to attract directors who can contribute strategic insight, international perspective, and fund-raising expertise.
Desired candidate profiles
The Board welcomes applications from individuals who can demonstrate experience and competence in one or more of the following areas:
International and global networks
- Experience working within international arts, philanthropic, or investment sectors.
- Ability to facilitate global partnerships, touring opportunities, and artistic collaborations.
- Understanding of cultural diplomacy and the international creative economy.
Fund-raising and development expertise
- Proven experience in mobilising philanthropic, corporate, or institutional support for non-profit or cultural initiatives.
- Knowledge of donor engagement, sponsorships, brand partnerships, or endowment development.
- Willingness to utilise personal and professional networks to advance Joburg Ballet’s fund-raising efforts.
Strategic and financial acumen
- Background in business strategy, governance, financial management, or organisational development.
- Capacity to support Joburg Ballet’s long-term financial sustainability and strategic positioning.
- Understanding of non-profit governance in both South African and international contexts.
Additional attributes
- Commitment to the arts, transformation, and equitable access to cultural opportunities.
- Collaborative and ethical leadership style.
- Prior board or senior governance experience will be an advantage.
Commitment and tenure
Directors will be appointed in line with Joburg Ballet’s Memorandum of Incorporation. These are voluntary, non-remunerated positions. Board members are expected to:
- Attend quarterly Board meetings and annual strategic sessions.
- Serve on at least one Board Committee (such as Artistic Innovation; Fundraising and Brand Association; Audit and Risk; Remuneration, Governance and Nominations; or Social, Ethics and Transformation).
- Actively promote Joburg Ballet’s mission and values within their networks.
