Phila Madlingozi releases #FeesMustFall single
South African musician Phila Madlingozi has released a single inspired by student protests taking place on his country's university campuses.
Featuring Solo (real name Zothile Langa), 'Phila' was released yesterday and is available on SoundCloud. The song has been well-received and has been dubbed the #FeesMustFall song.
"Tuition not paid but the grades up... dropping fees but I'm stuck with these amounts..." some of the song's lyrics go.
South African universities erupted in protests last year as students demanded that tuition fees be scrapped. The #FeesMustFall campaign flared up again a few months ago after it became clear that the students' call would not be heeded.
Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande announced that there would be fee increases of up to 8% in 2017. The announcement was met with resistance by university students across all tertiary institutions.
It's not the first time that the young entertainer, the son of the famous singer Ringo Madlingozi, has lent his name to social causes. He has also been named as an ambassador for ZAZI, an organisation that tackles abuse of women and children.
At the same time Phila has kept up his entertainment industry ambitions, despite being axed from talent show Idols last year. The singer is currently featuring in a TV series called Mutual Friends on SABC 1 and Isikizi on the Mzansi Magic channel.
