Planet Afropunk announces line-up
Afropunk has announced the 2020 line-up for its free virtual event from 23 to 25 October.
The line-up features a number of South African musicians, such as Elaine, Moonchild Sanelly and Bongeziwe Mabandla, as well as Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage and Mali’s Songhoy Blues.
Other acts include Masego, Smino, Ari Lennox, Theon Cross, Sampa the Great & Petite Noir, Serpentwithfeet and ÀTTØØXXÁ, among many more. Interested viewers should RSVP for the event here.
This year’s edition will run under the name Planet Afropunk and will see the performances streamed from around the world, including the US (Atlanta and Los Angeles), Nigeria, South Africa, Botswana and the UK.
The event will also feature a list of guest speakers including comedienne and actress Amanda Seales, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah correspondent Dulcé Sloan and multimedia journalist Ivie Ani.
“Following the events of this year, Planet Afropunk has been designed to encourage the continued live interaction, activism and debate on racial justice normally associated with its physical festival,” Afropunk said. “There will be space curated to explore everything from politics and social justice, meditation and black self-care, through to the trendsetting cultural hot takes emanating within the black community.”
Afropunk is calling on all makers, traders and curators to apply to become a vendor at the online festival‘s market. Vendors will be featured on the Afropunk website beginning one week before the festival and for at least one week after the festival. Interested vendors can apply here.
Afropunk says viewers can expect music and art, an opportunity to support black-owned businesses and in-depth conversations.
This year’s edition will go online for the first time following the event’s cancellation around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, the Afropunk Joburg edition featured international headliners Solange and Miguel.
