SA: Local radio jockeys to light up Metro FM Awards
Popular South African radio DJs Pearl Modiadie and Amon Mokoena will be hosting the 16th edition of the Metro FM Awards at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in the South African coastal city of Durban tonight.
Modiadie and Mokoena are no doubt well-suited to host the renowned event. Modiadie is also a television presenter, actress and producer best known to TV audiences for presenting SABC 1’s music talk show Zaziwa. Born in the Tembisa township, Johannesburg, Modiadie is a journalist by profession and has worked for big media establishments such as YFM and SABC 1. She broke into showbiz when she landed a debut on e.tv soapie Scandal.
Mokoena, a North West University communications graduate, has a rich media background. He kick-started his career as an intern at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and as a presenter for Motsweding FM. Mokoena has been in radio since 1996 as a DJ and producer. He has worked for various radio stations such as VCR FM 90.6, Horizon Stereo, Radio Eldos and Commuter FM.
“Every year we change it around and this year it was their (Modiadie and Mokoena’s) turn,” SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago was reported as saying by local media. “They share a show on Metro FM and we wanted to take the synergy they have and move it from radio to the event.”
Meanwhile, a local daily reported that Durban would benefit greatly from the awards, with about 72 million rand ($5.5m) expected to be injected into the city’s coffers.
