SA: Nomfusi drops Iqaqa single ahead of album release
South African singer Nomfusi has released ‘Iqaqa’. The single is accompanied by a video and is available for download and streaming on all major digital platforms.
‘Iqaqa’ is the lead single off Nomfusi’s upcoming 11-track album, which is set for release this August. ‘Iqaqa’ was inspired by the Xhosa idiom iqaqa aliziva kunuka, which translates to ‘a skunk does not smell itself’ and talks about people’s inability to recognise their faults. The song is driven by hip Afropop sounds, a strong vocal performance, melodic guitar riffs and groovy drums.
“It happened that I was going through a disagreement with my partner,” Nomfusi told Music In Africa. “The argument left me feeling like he is iqaqa [skunk] – he didn’t want to admit his faults. Let’s all open our channels of communication in any relationship we are into. We should learn to self-introspect so that we don’t end up being skunks who can’t smell themselves.
“We are living with a pandemic, the last thing anyone wants is to live with is a skunk. I intend to get people talking and having conversations about us being small or big skunks and having fun as we learn more about ourselves and admitting our faults. It’s a fun song where people can participate in the upcoming iqaqa challenges. I am sure everyone has one or more skunks in their lives and they can relate to what I’m singing.”
