Salif Keita to perform at Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman
Malian star Salif Keïta is set to bring the best of African music to the Middle East this week. Affectionately known as ‘The Golden Voice of Africa’, Keïta will perform at the Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) in Muscat, Oman on Thursday 28 January.
The Royal Opera House Muscat is the leading arts and culture organization in the Sultanate of Oman, which overlooks the Arabian Sea. It aims to serve as a centre of excellence in global cultural engagement, striving to enrich lives through diverse artistic, cultural, and educational programs. The multi-disciplinary work of the Royal Opera House Muscat showcases rich and diverse artistic creations. ‘World Music’ is an important dimension of its global programming and Salif Keïta is seen as an excellent representative of the music and culture of Oman’s neighbours in Africa.
Keïta's performance at the ROHM on Thursday from 7pm is expected to resonate with a broad cross-section of the venue's audience. The evening promises to be full of exciting African rhythms and Keita’s famed vocals.
Keïta himself needs little introduction. Born into a royal lineage but shunned because of his albinism, he has made his name over several decades and is today one of the most influential African musicians of his generation. From his early days in bands like Super Rail Band de Bamako and Les Ambassadeurs, he went solo in the 1980s with the album, Soro in 1987. More recently, La Difference won the prestigious Victoires de la musique in France for Best World Music in 2010.
This unique artist combines traditional West African music styles with influences from both Europe and the Americas, exploring the boundaries of jazz traditions with Afro-world fusion sounds and innovative instrumentation. Beyond his music, Keïta’s career is also distinguished by his humanitarian efforts, particularly with regards to HIV/Aids, malaria and albinism.
