Although released earlier this year, the album has not yet been performed nationally. The October dates mark Mashiloane’s first South African tour with the project, supported by Concerts SA – a joint South African/Norwegian initiative backed by the SAMRO Foundation, the National Treasury’s Jobs Fund and the Festival Enterprise Catalyst.
The first performance will take place on 5 October at the Youngblood Gallery in Cape Town, where Mashiloane will be joined by Ntokozo Kunene (vocals) and Justin Bellairs (saxophone) for an acoustic rendition of the repertoire. The second concert will follow on 11 October at Johannesburg’s Untitled Basement, featuring Sphelelo Mazibuko (drums), Dalisu Ndlazi (bass) and Kagiso Ramela (saxophone).
ISIGQI was recorded live in Basel, Switzerland, and reflects on African identity, history and the rhythms of daily life. The album includes tributes to influential South African musicians such as Madala Kunene, Tlale Makhene and Bheki Khoza. It has also earned a nomination in the Best African Jazz Artist category at the AFRIMA Awards.
Mashiloane, who lectures at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and holds a PhD in African musical heritage, has released multiple award-winning albums. His work blends tradition and innovation, with a focus on preserving South Africa’s musical legacy while exploring new interpretations of rhythm and harmony.
Tickets to the 5 and 11 October shows can be purchased here and here, respectively.
