Sony unveils Soneium blockchain platform
Sony Music's parent company, Sony Group Corporation (SGC), is developing a new blockchain platform called Soneium.
Soneium, created by Sony Block Solution Labs and Startale Labs, integrates Web3 and Web2 technologies to enhance blockchain applications in entertainment, gaming, and finance.
According to a press release, Soneium will harness SGC’s global distribution network to offer “an unprecedented opportunity to introduce blockchain technology to global users.”
“We will work to support creators in expanding their creativity and strengthening their engagement with the fan community,” Sony Block Solution Labs said. “Specifically, we will study the protection of rights to creativity, new mechanisms for returning profits to support creators and fans, and opportunities for creators to be active across the digital and real worlds.”
“We believe the development of a comprehensive Web3 solution is vital for the Sony Group, which is committed to enriching lives through creativity and technology,” Sony Block Solutions Labs chair Jun Watanabe said. “Our goal is to deliver unique customer value and make Web3 technology accessible to a broader audience.”
Soneium’s core values include creating a user experience that enhances creativity. It will also support existing services, and develop new applications linked to Sony Group’s businesses, focusing on protecting creative rights and enabling cross-platform engagement.
Soneium will offer a developer-friendly environment with extensive documentation and tools to facilitate application development. The project also emphasises mainstream adoption with its “GM with Soneium” initiative, aimed at bringing blockchain technology into everyday use.
“While the internet has contributed to improving convenience worldwide, it has led to the centralisation of a huge amount of information and the economic sphere online,” Sony said. “Web3 makes it possible to decentralise that concentrated power. Today, Web3 faces two challenges: the current community of Web3 technology and services is limited to a few core users and there are numerous use cases that have yet to gain the traction to go mainstream with the general public. The creation of killer use cases is eagerly awaited.”
In related news, this summer, the first Sony Music Group Global Scholars met in New York for a four-day conference. The students were part of the 50 from around the world who were awarded scholarships in November 2022 by the company for their passion for music and commitment to advancing the industry.
