SoundCloud buys Singaporean AI company Musiio
SoundCloud has acquired artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning platform Musiio “to bolster its position as a music discovery site.”
Musiio will help SoundCloud to identify talent and trends “ahead of anybody else”. It is expected to enhance SoundCloud’s existing music intelligence capabilities and allow the company to further leverage its vast data. Neither the terms of agreement nor the new features that can be expected have been disclosed.
Musiio analyses and ‘listens’ to large volumes of music released and instantly ranks and categorises them daily for its partners, which include record labels and music publishers. The tech can also do automated tagging and offers playlisting tools for the music industry. The platform claims its AI allows users to better predict success, and could increase their chances of success in terms of revenue.
“SoundCloud hosts more music from more creators than any platform on the planet,” SoundCloud president Eliah Seton said. “Acquiring Musiio accelerates our strategy to better understand how that music is moving in a proprietary way, which is critical to our success. We are honoured to partner with Hazel and Aron and welcome the absolutely brilliant team of innovators at Musiio to the SoundCloud family.”
Musiio co-founders Hazel Savage and Aron Pettersson will join the SoundCloud team as vice-presidents of music intelligence, and AI and machine learning, respectively. SoundCloud will fully integrate Musiio’s employees who will retain their positions.
“SoundCloud is not only a legendary household name but also an artist-forward business that I believe is the future of the new, holistic music industry,” Savage said. “I am incredibly proud that after four years of building Musiio we are now part of SoundCloud.”
Founded in 2018, Mussio is based in Singapore and was recently named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies for 2022. SoundCloud, meanwhile, was founded in 2007. It is an artist-first platform that boasts more than 300 million tracks from 30 million creators.
