South African rapper AKA shot dead in Durban

According to media, the ‘Lemons (Lemonade)’ hitmaker was killed along with his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane by two gunmen in front of the Wish restaurant in Florida Road. Graphically disturbing CCTV footage is circulating on social media showing the rapper being shot in the head point-blank from behind while saying goodbye to his friends outside the restaurant. AKA, who was scheduled to release his 14-track Mass Country album on 24 February, was reportedly booked to perform at a night club in the coastal city as part of his birthday celebrations.

“It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of February 10, 2023,” AKA’s parents, Tony and Lyn Forbes, said in a statement. “We are awaiting further details from the Durban police. In this time of grief we appeal for your compassion, space and time to congregate as family to decide on the upcoming days.”

Artists and music industry players took to social media to convey their condolences following news of the artist’s passing.

“In this sorrowful time SAMRO extends its last respect to Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes,” the South African Music Rights Organisation wrote on social media. “The music industry is saddened by his passing, he contributed immensely to the South African music industry. Condolences to his family, friends & industry colleagues in this dark time.”

Sony Music Entertainment Africa managing director Sean Watson said in a statement: “Our hearts are broken. We’ve lost not only an icon but someone who was dear to us as a member of the Sony family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones today. All of us at Sony Music convey our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family, friends, the Megacy and South Africa.”

South African rapper Da L.E.S wrote “Unbelievable” along with a heartbreaking emoji, while local TV host Jennifer Su wrote: “Devastated at the passing of AKA. Condolences to his family, friends and fans. We were co-presenters at the South African Music Awards (SAMAS) and I will always cherish our special time together.”

Zimbabwean rapper Kikky Badass wrote: “AKA’s untimely death is very sad and heartbreaking. Just like that? While having been booked for a show and birthday celebration. My deepest, most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and Miss Nadia Nakai.”

Born Kiernan Jarryd Forbes on 28 January 1988, AKA was raised in Cape Town, where he gained notable popularity after releasing his single ‘Victory Lap’ off his 2011 debut studio album, Altar Ego. He worked with local artists including Nasty C, Anatii, Khuli Chana, K.O., Yanga, Da L.E.S, ProKid and JR. His success continued with the release of albums such as Levels (2014), Touch My Blood (2018), Bhovamania (2020) and Be Careful What You Wish For (2017) with Anatii.

AKA won several accolades at the South African Music Awards, African Muzik Magazine Awards, MTV Africa Music Awards, South African Hip Hop Awards, Metro FM Music Awards, Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards and the Namibia Annual Music Awards.
