Top 10 bongo flava songs of February 2019
In February we kept tabs on Tanzania's bongo flava releases, many of which carried the favourite topic of love – perfect timing for Valentine’s Day.
The list sees Aslay and Rich Mavoko appearing in two releases, while Ommy Dimpoz returns after a year's break. Singer Jux starts the year with his first Kenyan collaboration alongside rapper Nyashinski.
'Ni Wewe' by Ommy Dimpoz
Ommy Dimpoz is back with 'Ni Wewe' after surviving food poisoning, which damaged his throat and forced him to undergo three major surgeries in South Africa and Germany. The song is a thank you to God for saving his life and to his fans for helping him blossom into the man he is today.
'Ukintekenya' by Shilole ft Aslay
As Aslay teams up with Shilole, the question is, how do you decrypt your partner’s love language? Well, these two totally know how to do it. Aslay says his love language is physical touch, and Shilole likes it. It's rare to see Aslay collaborate with another artist, so this is progress.
'Chanda Chema' by Darassa ft Marioo
Arguably one of the most consistent Tanzanian artists, Shariff Thabeet, popularly known as Darassa, begins his year with Marioo. The two profess their devotion to their women and hint at proposing.
'Hazipo' by Nandy
Still on the theme of love, after releasing ‘Aibu’ four months ago, Nandy, who is also known as the 'African Princess', manages to ignite proper butterfly moments for any lovers out there as she gets lost in fantasy and the memories of her love story. The video is beautifully shot on the coast and sums up the feeling of elation when in love.
'Asante' by Damian Soul and Barnaba
Bongo flava artist Damian Soul teams up with singer Barnaba for a new gospel joint titled ‘Asante’. They give thanks to God for his grace, mercy, life, friends, family, and success.
'Bam Bam' by Fid Q, Isha Mashauzi, Rich Mavoko and Big Jahman
A handy song to roar along to when you've had a few beverages. These veteran Tanzanian artists know how to team up for a club banger: the song is upbeat and the vocals and raps flow; it's a song that could be on repeat until the end of the year, and beyond.
'Mawazo' by Brown Mauzo
In relationships, regret is like a boomerang. You never know when it will come back and hit you right in the fac. In ‘Mawazo’, Mauzo (that's a tongue twister if you say it a hundred times) understands that some mistakes are more challenging to make right than others. Nevertheless, he is determined to find his way back into his lover's heart by asking for forgiveness.
'Edda' by G Nako ft Aslay and Rich Mavoko
There is nothing better than finding someone who completes every part of your life. However, sometimes things get tough quicker than expected, and most people find it difficult to let go of a relationship. All they hang on to are the nostalgic memories of when they fell in love for the first time.
'Shoko' by Snura ft Minu Calypto
Controversial singer Snura collaborates with Minu Calypto in ‘Shoko’. This release is way out of her comfort zone, as she is known to make videos for the so-called erotic entertainment niche. She is one of the artists whose music videos was banned by the Tanzania Arts Council (BASATA) for being ‘immoral’ last year.
'In Case You Don't Know' by Jux ft Nyashinski
‘In Case You Don't Know’ could easily pass for the best East African collaboration so far this year. Jux seems to have his head in the music game. He is not just about ‘making it’ but about standing out and breaking barriers. This is his first collaboration with a Kenyan artist, and people love it.
