Rajey won the competition with his French-sung single ‘Tendre Ami’, which will be featured on the recently launched Trace Gospel TV channel. The winner's prize is worth R80 000 ($4 200), which will go towards the production of a music video.
Rajey, a part-time student at University of Johannesburg, triumphed against Alexandra resident Thuso Wa Sibini and Cape Town-based Shana Ray.
“If I were to win the competition, it would help elevate my music, introducing it to a new audience,” Rajey said before winning the competition. "I sing mainly for the youth, the generation that is often marginalised in society and even in church. I make my music to touch their soul and show them that they are not alone.”
Trace Southern Africa managing director Valentine Gaudin-Muteba said: “We would like to congratulate Rajey for his win. His song touched many hearts and it showed that the power of music transcends languages. We also thank all the musicians who entered the competition and most importantly the fans of gospel music who voted.
“Having had the pleasure of listening to all the singles that were submitted, it’s clear to me that the gospel music scene is only going to get bigger and bigger.”
