Ugandan singer launches YouTube show to celebrate women
Ugandan singer Juliana Kanyomozi has launched a new online talk show on YouTube.
Kanyomozi told a local publication that The Sit Down With Yana would promote feminism and empower women by celebrating their achievements.
“I have always loved to have some kind of talk show, though I wasn’t sure where I wanted to do it and how I wanted to do it,” she said.
“Recently, I just decided to do something and put it on my channel to discuss things I have always been passionate about, things I have always wanted to talk about and shed light on people I have always wanted to celebrate.”
The singer said she hoped the show would empower young women interested in joining the creative industry.
“I have always been a feminist. I just gravitate towards empowering women. When I was creating the show, I told someone that I feel women aren’t celebrated enough and it’s high time we started to celebrate ourselves. So it came naturally for me to give women and young girls the platform.”
The talk show will feature guests who will discuss the barriers that women face.
“There are things that people do not know about us, such as the challenges and failures of top female influencers in the creative sector," Kanyomozi.
"I Thought if I gave people the insight to the life of female icons, then these stories will inspire many girls out there.”
The first episode of The Sit Down With Yana premiered on Friday and featured dancehall singer Sheebah Karungi, who spoke about her experience of working in a male-dominated industry.
“I have worked in showbiz for a while,” Karungi said. “Social media bullies can really give you a hard time, so I rarely give them my time and energy.
"It’s a man’s world and it’s very disrespectful because I've had to push and work harder to prove that I deserve to get the same, or even more, than what men are getting.”
