Virgin Music Group names Nicole Thomas and Nick Ghelakis as SA managers
Global record label Virgin Music Group (VMG) has named Nicole Thomas and Nick Ghelakis as co-country managers of VGM South Africa.
Thomas and Ghelakis will oversee the company’s expansion in the region following the passing of Chris Ghelakis, a music executive who founded Electromode in 2001. Electromode was acquired by Ingrooves Music Group in 2021 and began rebranding as Virgin Music Group in late 2023.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Ghelakis embarked on an artistic journey, earning an award at the South African Music Awards at the age of 19. He later pursued a degree in accounting from the University of South Africa, which led him to explore a new passion in studio engineering. His professional path took him to London, where he gained valuable experience at PricewaterhouseCoopers. In 2010, he joined his father’s company, Electromode, in Johannesburg, where he spent several years honing his skills as a digital marketer.
“I am so proud to be continuing my father’s legacy here in South Africa,” Ghelakis said. “Working with Nicole and the incredible global team at Virgin Music Group will empower us to nurture and help so many African artists attain their dreams on the international stage.”
Thomas boasts a distinguished career in the music industry, including being the general manager of Electromode from 2017 to 2021. She then made a strategic move to Ingrooves Africa in 2021, followed by a transition to Virgin Music Group in 2022. Prior to her tenure at Electromode, Thomas honed her skills in studio management at SCR Studios in Johannesburg, where she excelled in client relations, marketing, promotions, business development and operations. Earlier in her career, she served as executive assistant to Electromode founder Ghelakis, and began her journey in the finance department at Primedia Music in 2001.
Thomas said: “Working alongside Nick Ghelakis to carry on the legacy of his father Chris Ghelakis and his great company Electromode, which is now further empowered by Virgin Music Group, one of the most respected music business brands in the world, is really a dream come true.”
She added: “I’m looking forward to working with JT Myers, Nat Pastor, Michael Roe and the rest of the Virgin Music Group team to create the very best opportunities both for our local artist community as well as the amazing repertoire we work with around the world.”
VMG’s managing director for Africa, the Middle East and Asia, Michael Roe, said: “South Africa is without a doubt one of the most exciting music markets in the world. Nick and Nicole have deep ties to the creative community along with the ambition and vision to create opportunities for local artists around the world. Our South African business is in good hands under their leadership.”
VMG co-CEO JT Myers said: “Nicole and Nick both bring with them decades of experience in the South African music market, characterised by a fierce devotion to local artists and a real vision to spread the country’s incredible music far beyond its own borders. Their leadership ensures continuity as we continue to grow this hugely important music market both within the country and around the world.”
